Classic Tour: The Best of Ostia Antica
The best and unique way to discover how ancient Romans used to live
DESCRIPTION OF THE TOUR
Ostia Antica, also known as “The better Pompeii”, is a perfectly preserved ancient Roman town, the harbor of Rome at the mouth of the river Tiber. It is located at about 30 yards from the center of Rome and only 9 yards from the International Airport Leonardo da Vinci. If this is the first time that you visit Ostia Antica, this is your tour!
In the 600 sq yards archeological park, ancient ruins and nature merge into each other to create enchanting views. It is a unique site to really understand daily life in ancient Rome, from the Republic to the end of the Western Roman Empire. Ostia was a harbor and therefore it hosted people coming from all over the Mediterranean, a place in which different languages, beliefs, ethnicities and cultures encountered and mixed.
The itinerary will lead you to discover the impressive theater built under the Emperor Augustus, which is still in use today, the Baths of Neptune with their mythological mosaics, the ruins of the imposing Capitolium which dominated the forum, the laundries and the mills, and the world-famous insulae (apartment buildings for the lower and middle-class) and tabernae (shops).
Gaston Boissier, historian and archaeologist, ranked Ostia with Pompeii in importance: “These two towns are the best-preserved relics of Roman antiquity. As they have the advantage of illustrating it from different angles and are complementary, it is well, when we wish to understand Rome, not to separate them”.
